NMSL Celebrates 25th
Anniversary Year with College Scholarships for Class
of 2007
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, New Mexico Student
Loans will award 25 college scholarships of $1,000 each
to members of the Class of 2007 at New Mexico public
high schools.
The scholarships are intended to
support students who have a strong desire to succeed in
college but may not qualify for other scholarships or
sufficient financial aid.
In order to distribute the
scholarships as evenly as possible around the state, New
Mexico’s public high schools have been grouped into 17
geographic clusters. Each applicant will compete only
with applicants in his/her own cluster – meaning
students within their own school district and in
neighboring districts. Fewer than 1,000 high school
seniors are eligible for each scholarship.
Winners will be chosen based on merit, aptitude, effort and
financial need. Applicants must submit a 150-word essay
entitled “What Going to College Means to Me (and My
Family).” Applicants must also complete a brief
questionnaire on their family size and income,
extracurricular activities and employment history.
NMSL marketing outreach representatives will distribute
scholarship brochures, applications and posters to New
Mexico public high school counselors throughout
September. Duplicate applications and information are
also available at the NMSL website,
www.nmstudentloans.org.
Students must submit applications to their high school
counseling office by Jan. 15, 2007. High school
counselors will have until Feb. 1 to review the
applications and make notations or recommendations, if
desired, and forward them to NMSL.
NMSL staff will review the applications – and school
counselors’ recommendations – and select 25 potential
winners by mid-April. Income, activity or employment
documentation may be required from select applicants at
this time.
Scholarship recipients will be announced May 1-15, with
awards presented at graduation and/or senior awards
ceremonies wherever possible. Scholarship funds will be
transmitted directly to recipients’ colleges to be
applied directly to their accounts.
