New Mexico Student Loans -
2003 Employees of the Year
New Mexico Student Loans would like
to share its good news with all our friends in the
financial aid industry. The following NMSL
employees have been selected by their colleagues as
“Employee of the Year” for their specific department
because of the outstanding job they’ve done going above
and beyond the call of duty. Many of them work
behind the scenes with our student borrowers to ease the
otherwise complicated and sometimes frustrating process.
Because of them, all of our jobs have been made a little
easier. Please join us in congratulating the
following NMSL employees:
Finance
Paul Salazar –
Assistant Accountant
- Paul’s professional demeanor,
work ethic and quality of work have proven to be
exceptional, as is his knowledge of computer
applications.
- Co-workers commented that he
is truly a pleasure to work with.
- His interpersonal skills are
excellent. He provides wonderful customer service
and is always willing to go the extra mile.
- With Paul’s strong technical
background he is able to assist others. He is
a team player the management staff and co-workers
can always depend on to get the job done.
- He has streamlined many
functions, taken on additional duties and worked
with other departments to improve processes.
- Paul is organized and detail
oriented in all tasks and his work product is
top-notch.

Service
Maria Espinoza
– Customer Service Representative II
- Maria is dedicated to serving
the customer base.
- She follows up to make sure
the borrower’s problem is resolved and they are
satisfied.
- Maria is willing to help solve
difficult problems.
- She is a very hard worker and
takes her job seriously.
- Maria is always helpful to
co-workers and they appreciate her generosity and
smile.
- Maria is great when working
with borrowers, always speaks in a pleasant tone,
even when things get hectic.

Legal
Pamela Stephen
– Lead Collector
- Pam’s coworkers and manager in
the default collections area feel that she is a very
knowledgeable, extremely helpful and professional
with borrowers, fellow co-workers and her manager.
- Her work ethic is very high;
she is both personable and professional in all her
dealings.

The default collections area
experienced a difficult time in 2003 and Pam kept up
her spirits, as well as those of her co-workers.
- Pam is always available to
perform additional work and offer advice, above and
beyond demands of her positions, making her a
benefit to the entire company.
- In the words of her
colleagues, “Pam is an awesome lead”. She is always
there to help whenever needed, no matter how busy
she is.
- She makes good decisions in
difficult situations, even under pressure.

Technologies
Thomas Peterson
– Network Specialist
- He is pleasant and willing to
help.
- He readily assists co-workers
and always with a smile. Whether training staff or
speaking with borrowers, he makes them feel
important.
- Tom is able to handle constant
interruptions easily and isn’t distracted from his
mission.
- He shows staff various
functions in the software program and instructs them
on the easiest way to accomplish tasks.
- His style is friendly and
helpful, never rude or impatient.
- Tom is exceptional. His
intelligence, work ethic and passion for quality are
perfect examples of an ideal employee.
Administration
Group
Sharon Hodge –
Executive Assistant
Sharon is very professional with the all employees, the
Board members and management.
Her organization and
dedication to service keeps an exceedingly busy
executive on time and on task.
Sharon is willing to go the
extra mile and help anyone in the company.
She’s always willing to give
assistance, no matter how large or small the
project.
Working in an extremely busy
area, Sharon takes time with NMSL employees or
visitors to make them feel comfortable when visiting
with the President or a member of the Leadership
Team.
Sharon is well respected by
Board members, management and employees because of
her commitment to the goals of our organization.
Management
Teresa Carrillo
– Manager of Loan Administration and Training
- Teresa’s “can do” attitude is
a great example for all who work with her.
This attitude makes her very professional, but she’s
also a fun manager.

- She is able to work across all
functions and with all people, both inside and
outside the organization.
- She takes ownership of her job
and employees.
- Teresa is always willing to
“step up to the plate” and you can always depend on
her to follow through.
- She took on the role of being
our point person with ELM. Teresa was bound and
determined to see the implementation through and
make sure it was as smooth as possible for the
colleges NMSL serves.
Teresa also experienced departmental reorganization
this year and has handled the transition well. She
has always been extremely cooperative and helpful to
work with and, more importantly, her word is golden.
You can always count on Teresa to do her best and to
deliver what she’s promised.
