High School Counselors and NMSL Reps:
Working Together to Assist You

High school counselors play a vital role in guiding students to resources they’ll need after leaving high school.  They provide information about preparing for further education and careers, and facilitate student contacts with college and postsecondary training staff.

School counselors are professional educators, licensed by the state, with master’s degrees (or higher) in school counseling or a comparable field.  They are trained in the skills needed to address students’ academic, personal, social and career development needs.

High school counselors advocate and care for their students.  They consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators and families to help students succeed academically, vocationally and personally.

Graduating seniors are encouraged to reach out to their counselors for information, assistance in researching career or educational options, and help in preparing for college.

New Mexico Student Loans marketing outreach representatives are also available to help students, parents and counselors navigate the process of paying for college.  NMSL reps work closely with high school counselors, students and parents around the state to provide training, FAFSA workshops and one-on-one financial aid counseling.

Every fall, NMSL marketing outreach representatives travel the state to coordinate College Night events, which feature college information, recruiters and presentations on paying for college.  Each spring, they conduct hands-on workshops in high schools around the state, to help students and their parents complete their FAFSA forms.

Beware of websites that charge a fee to help you file the FAFSA.  These sites are not affiliated with (or endorsed by) the U.S. Department of Education, which oversees the financial aid application process.

NMSL marketing outreach representatives are available year-round to answer your financial aid questions and help you complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) – for free.  That’s because NMSL is a non-profit organization, created by the State to make higher education more affordable and accessible for New Mexicans.

NMSL marketing outreach representatives are available to assist you during regular business hours, year-round.  Call (505) 761-2200 or 1-800-827-5063, ext. 1000.
